South Florida Utilization Review (SFUR) has been performing all case physician advisor reviews — telephonic and retrospective — as well as quality assurance projects since 1986.
We currently perform physician advisor level utilization review for a number of insurance carriers and we do external peer review for 140 hospitals. A third service is our negotiation of hospital bills, surgeon’s bills and ambulatory surgical center bills.
South Florida Utilization Review is a member of the National Association of Independent Review Organizations (NAIRO). In 2004 South Florida Utilization Review achieved accreditation by URAC, now one of a small number of review organizations in the United States to have earned that distinction. We recently have been further accredited to November 1, 2013. In March 2011 we celebrated our 25th anniversary of operation as one of the first private independent review organizations in Florida.
We employ 150 physician advisors in Florida, the southeast United States, Texas, and Connecticut who are board certified in their specialties. These physicians are credentialed by us every two years so our clients need not worry about undertaking this time-consuming process. We provide admission and continued stay telephonic review services; external peer review including second reads of radiology and pathology studies and of hospital medical and surgical cases. We provide hospital, surgical, and ambulatory surgery center bill analysis and negotiation.

We have board-certified specialists in every American Board of Medical Specialities (ABMS) listed speciality. For workers compensation reviews we employ specialists in orthopedics, neurology, spine surgery, neurosurgery, pain management and anesthesiology, physical medicine and rehabilitation, psychiatry, chiropractic, and all other work-related and group health specialities as well as specialists . Our doctors have handled tens of thousands of pre-certification telephonic back surgery, orthopedic surgery and imaging study utilization review requests as well as retrospective reviews for ongoing testing and management of back and joint cases. We meet regularly in telephone conference to discuss issues related to hospital external peer reviews, workers compensation claims and group health claims. We are prepared to see these cases through litigation if that becomes necessary.
